“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, you need a team.” ~John Wooden
“Delegating work works, provided the one delegating works, too.” – Robert Half
We’ve all been there, we bust our tail getting the report finished and polished, but don’t have the energy to take action on the data held within. We spend all week getting the new product ready to launch, but don’t have the energy to actually sell or service it once the doors open. It’s like Christmas morning, where you are given a great new toy to play with, except you were the one who had to stay up all night assembling it.
You use too much emotional capital getting it ready, but don’t have enough left over to finish the job. This is one of the BEST reasons to delegate tasks. It takes a lot of trust and energy to delegate, but if you don’t, you may not be able to actually get the full benefit of anything you create.
Think of the process from start to finish as a relay race and divide up the tasks, then celebrate the results as a TEAM. This may already be occurring in a number of areas, but for those your department controls from start to finish, this can be a HUGE benefit.
Truthfully, this is one reason Consultants often have the easiest job in the world. Your business provides them with the information, and they have the energy to use it in the best way for the business. To use the Sports analogy again, they are the fresh pair of legs you bring in as a substitute near the end of the game.
Be your own consultant by breaking tasks into pieces of a relay race.
